Important Developments in Israel
May 9, 2008 at 10:53 am | In Middle East |There’s a lot going on in Israel right now. I think I heard someone on the subway say something about the prime minister possibly being indicted, and today some kids playing stickball on the street told me about a civil war in neighboring Lebanon or something like that. But, of course, what I’m really talking about is scantily-clad women trying to get you to visit the country. The Zionist dream, indeed.
(This comes to me by way of Andrea J, film tycoon and Friend-of-the-Blog, who runs a fine blog of her own — and one that is well worth fighting for.)
TODAY IN RADIO: As seems to be the case lately, I don’t actually know when the show will air, but today I’m doing an interview on The Bob Edwards Show. Your guess as to when it airs is as good as mine (Monday?), but there you go. I realize that wasn’t very helpful.
UPDATE: No, not Monday. But soon. Basically, there was no point posting this today at all.

Do you also get a kick out of the “Israel: Let’s party like it’s 1948″ celebratory ad campaign?
I mean. What to celebrate? It’s 1948. All of our relatives have been systematically persecuted and slaughtered. But at least it’s over? Oooh. Now we’re fighting our cousins in the desert. Awesome. Pass the champagne.

What’s to celebrate? Yes, the horror of things that happened in WWII were beyond words to describe. Yes, the war of independence saw untold misery on both sides. Nevertheless, 1948 saw the establishment of a homeland for the Jewish people in Eretz Yisrael … a place where Jews could determine their own destiny without having to take into account the whims of foreign princes and kings. For a Jew to ask what was so good about 1948 is akin to an American asking what was so good about 1776. Never underestimate the value of being free to be who you are without fear. Never forget to celebrate it while you have it.
