I just finished reading “The History of the Jewish People,” edited by H.H. Ben-Sasson. The convoluted relationship between Jews in Eretz Yisrael (real and hoped for) and Jews in the Diaspora over the centuries makes for an interesting story. The internal struggle to assimilate or return still seems to affect every modern Jew in one way or another. Most of the tension today seems to be between Jews in Israel who are living on the edge of survival (or at least perceive themselves to be doing so) in order to provide a sanctuary for all Jews, and those Jews, especially in North America, who are relatively secure in their everyday life and want to devote their full energies to taking advantage of the “pursuit of happiness” aspects of Noth American life. There are many parallels in the attitudes of Jews in 19th-century and early 20th-century Germany and the attitudes of North American Jews in the 21st century. I think if I were Jewish, living in either Israel or the Diaspora, I would realize that a “them and us” mentality is a luxury that Jews cannot afford in this day and age.
