Too Little, Too Late
September 30, 2008 at 9:31 am | In Middle East | Leave a CommentWow, so just as Prime Minister Olmert is packing up to leave the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office, and has what they call his “legacy interview” with one of Israel’s main newspapers, he decides to say what he really thinks. And what does he really think? That Israel has to give up East Jerualem and the Golan Heights in order to get peace.
People on the Right are upset. People on the Left are upset. Hijinks ensue.
101 Bad Ideas: Idea Number Nine
September 26, 2008 at 2:18 pm | In Middle East | Leave a CommentSay you’re Iran — it could happen! – and you’ve just heard that Israel has reportedly asked permission to bomb you, and you know that it is already doing all kind of sneaky things like sneaking. What do you do? That’s right. You taunt it in the most offensive way possible. A good plan indeed.

What Is It Good For?
September 24, 2008 at 4:17 pm | In Middle East | Leave a CommentThere’s a lot of depressing stuff to make fun of right now, but this article is among the most alarming, economy notwithstanding. Russia, it seems, wants war in the Middle East — and if Israel is pushed too far, my guess is that is exactly what it will get.

The Nervous Breakdown
September 22, 2008 at 8:41 am | In American Politics, Culture, Miscellaneous | Leave a CommentAs I mentioned a little while ago, I’m now going to be contributing to The Nervous Breakdown, a great site shared by a collection of writers. As of Friday, my first post there is up, and more will follow.
Admittedly, my piece there is based on something I once wrote on this blog, but it’s been updated and added to (and you didn’t read it the first time anyway, even though I asked you to), so you should still check it out.

Silver Screen
September 18, 2008 at 8:11 am | In Culture | Leave a CommentIn his funny post about attending the Toronto Film Festival, Daniel seems to take it as a given that watching movies is a “remarkably private and solitary activity.” I’m not sure that’s true.
Obviously, our individual minds make sense of the pictures and sounds, but there seems to be a good deal of interaction with other members of a film audience as well. I’m not sure that the big screen and the speakers are the only reason we like going to the theater. I think there is some element of having a shared experience. No?
