Helen Can Teach You How To Butcher A Hog
October 29, 2008 at 3:43 pm | In Miscellaneous | 2 CommentsA long time ago, I wrote a post with the title “Hog-Butcher to the World” about an appearance I was making on Chicago radio. As I noted shortly afterward, this brought google-using people here looking for instructions on how to butcher a hog.
Back then I said that if you are using the internet to learn how to butcher a hog, then maybe you should reconsider doing it yourself. I just think there are some things you need someone to teach you. And I stick to that.
But since then I have been getting people coming here on a very regular basis looking to learn how to butcher a hog. Trust me, I don’t know how and really can’t show you. I was tempted to post a youtube video I found on how to do it, as a sort of favor to these random visitors, but the video was far too disgusting.
But today I see that Helen actually went to a pig butchering class. So she now knows how. Go ask her and leave me alone. It doesn’t seem like the kind of thing a girl living in Brooklyn needs to know, but know it she does, for some reason. So, please visit Helen’s blog for all your hog butchering needs.
Also, on a completely unrelated note, my sister really wants you to see this video:
Now go away.
Shut Up, I’m Touring Again
October 22, 2008 at 8:21 pm | In Books | 3 CommentsSo, I’m back on the road spreading the good word about Shut Up, I’m Talking.
I pretty much say and do the exact same thing everywhere I go, so if you’ve seen my routine, I wouldn’t bother showing up again (but you could still buy the book again — it’s way better the second time.)
If you haven’t seen my song and dance, though, here are some dates and places where you can find me:
Tomorrow, October 22, 2008, 7:30 PM – Winnipeg, Manitoba
And courtesy of the good people at the Jewish Book Council (and the fact that I did THIS some time ago):
- November 2, 2008 — San Francisco
- November 3, 2008 — St. Louis
- November 5, 2008 — Houston
- November 9, 2008 — Cincinnati
- November 12, 2008 – Virginia Beach
I’m also speaking at a Model United Nations on November 15th, but you’re not invited to that. I just mention it because I think it’s funny.
You are, however, invited to an event I have in Toronto on December 3rd that you can find here.
More book events to come, believe it or not, including — in 2009 — two stops in Florida, one in Pennsylvania, and one more in Toronto.
Notes
October 21, 2008 at 8:32 am | In Miscellaneous | Leave a Comment- Like I said, tonight I will be having a public conversation about subject matter I am totally unqualified to speak about. Perhaps you are interested in seeing the illusion for yourself.
- Tomorrow I’ll be posting the list of my upcoming book events across the US and Canada. Come back and take a look then.
In Search of Time
October 16, 2008 at 6:19 pm | In Books | 1 Comment
I know very little about science. (Pretty much everything I do know I learned from this) That’s what makes me an odd unexpected choice to help at a launch party for a new science-related book.
But I was honored when my friend Dan Falk asked me if I would do it. His new book, In Search of Time, is about to come out: November 11th in the U.S., this coming Tuesday in Canada.
At his launch in Toronto on Tuesday, I’ll be interviewing Dan about his amazing achievement in front of all his adoring fans.
Maybe you’ll be there?
This book is astonishing. Firstly, the subject matter it details is literally astonishing.
Secondly, for a pretty heady topic, it is an amazingly engaging read. Dan is such a good writer that even I was able to understand sizable portions.
The launch is at The Charlotte Room. It’s free and there will be “time-related music,” and Dan, and his book and, for no apparent reason, me.
My Second Nervous Breakdown
October 10, 2008 at 11:34 am | In Miscellaneous | Leave a CommentOver at the The Nervous Breakdown, I have a new little piece up about an excruciating incident with which I was recently involved. It’s called “This Must Never Happen Again.” Take a look.

October 9, 2008 at 12:34 pm | In Books | Leave a CommentI have not spent enough time in San Francisco, and so I’m looking forward to going there in a few weeks. It’s just too bad I will only be there for an incredibly brief period of time. I’ll be appearing at Bookfest there on November 2nd, so if you’re in the neighborhood, get ready to come on by.
This is just one of a slew of new book events I’ll be doing over the next few months — Winnipeg on October 23rd comes to mind as well – and I’ll post more details about the rest of them soon.
Merry Yom Kippur
October 8, 2008 at 11:40 am | In Miscellaneous | Leave a CommentIt pains me to have to argue a bit with the granddaughter of one of my childhood heroes, but I’m afraid I have to. Novelist Melanie Greenberg, granddaughter of Hank Greenberg — the baseball star who famously sat out a crucial game because of the Jewish Day of Atonement — has an interesting piece in The Jerusalem Post. Essentially, she argues that today’s Jewish baseball players have a responsibility to sit out games during Yom Kippur, in order ”to serve as representatives for their people.”
I think that’s sort of offensive.
On her grandfather, she writes, “For American Jews, who were still only acknowledged as second-class citizens, his was a meaningful decision.” That’s certainly true as far as it goes, but the idea that American Jews are still second-class citizens is paranoid nonsense.
I would argue, in fact, that sitting out games today when you’re not even religious could actually forward an anti-Semitic idea — that is, that Jews always remain a people apart. Being a regular player, though, does just the opposite.
But maybe that’s because I think baseball is a force for good, and religion is, well…
Greenberg writes that while her grandfather “would not be met by the roar of the stadium crowd, he was greeted with thunderous applause and a standing ovation when he walked into temple.”
I know which one I’d choose.
